In the past few weeks, the blogosphere, or more specifically the WordPress-using part of it, has been watching industry stalwarts debating to and fro about the licensing terms of WordPress plugins and themes.
In the end, one should keep in mind that WordPress has been GPL, and Matt, its creator, has a vision for the software. Anybody who snubs that has no business working with WordPress. The message from Matt is clear – you can make money, sell your services, code etc. as long as you license under GPL, those parts of your theme/plugin that is directly linked to the WordPress core.
As for the community, I have a suggestion: why not focus on more important issues, like WordPress security (an XSS vulnerability caused v2.8.2 update recently), marketing, performance, code bloat etc.?
The last two topics deserve dedicated post, and are something that have been gnawing at me for quite some time. That is correct – they are issues that cause some worries, and in recent releases, the trends have done nothing to change it. I’ll write about them in posts dedicated to them – I reckon that there will be a few comments on the topic.
